Bug ID: 119553
Summary: A better navigation in Calc's tabs
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 6.1.0.3 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: libreoffice-bugs at lists.freedesktop.org
Reporter: J22Gim at gmail.com
Description:
I suggest an improvement for Calc: a better (faster and more intuitive) way of
navigate through tabs in a spreadsheet. Very useful when working with many
tabs.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a new file
2. Create many new sheets (AKA tabs), for example 70 new sheets
Actual Results:
What do you do if you want to move from Sheet1 to Sheet50?
Answer: You have to "search" for it it sequentially, ie go from Sheet2 to
Sheet50 either by repeatedly pressing the right-pointing arrow or quickly
scrolling with the mouse (and probably missing all the names in between). Or
you can go directly to Sheet70 (ie using the "'go to last'-arrow" button) and
then "come back" with the left arrow until you find Sheet50. That is suboptimal
(considering there are tools available to avoid this) and somehow too
"mechanical" GUI behavior.
Expected Results:
I suggest adding a 5th arrow, pointing either up- or downwards, which shows a
drop-down menu of all the tabs. I borrowed the idea from Firefox*, please see
attached example. This shows in bold font the tab currently in display, and all
the other tabs in regular fonts. This is very nice because let's you see at a
glance all the tabs with their names, their order and also move very quickly to
the one you need to go. This non-linear movement from one tab to another is
much more appealing, in my opinion, than the traditional way of sequentially
looking for one tab, which makes sense probably only in the 80's when Lotus was
developed and early 90's. Anyway, I think it would be a very nice addition for
average and new users because it's, in my view, much more "natural" than
pressing 50 times a button to scroll 50 tabs.
* Honestly I can't remember if it is the default behavior or I have a plugin
for this.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
I don't know if MS Excel has this, but it would be a nice addition to add a
useful tool that other spreadsheet packages don't have...
