I have downloaded your xhtml file, and also created an xhtml file as you
suggest
Image is well embeded in the file, 
but 
when I use this file as a signature in thunderbird, result is not good (see the
attached jpeg file)

and if it was OK this will not solve the bug 115077   with the same problem of
empty image (send a mail in html format throw mail merge wizard)
