Some recent work to get font sorted, please retest with current master/6.2.0
build.

Also, to rule out issue is with your IME -- please also test using the Special
Character dialog to enter the strings of 

あ  U+3042 HIRAGANA LETTER A

い  U+3044 HIRAGANA LETTER I

Does Impress remain stable with current master, and with selection done from
the Special Character dialog?
