--- Comment #1 from Maxim Monastirsky <momonasmon at gmail.com> ---
Currently the global and the per-sheet settings are independent of each other,
and stored separately into ods. And the grid lines of a specific sheet are
visible only if both of these settings are true. Therefore, making a per-sheet
show setting override the global hide setting, will make the global setting
effectively ignored for existing sheets, as any sheet has a per-sheet setting
(set to either true or false) anyway. To solve this, we'll need to make sure
that once the global setting is modified, all sheets are iterated, and their
per-sheet setting is reseted to the global one (or to a 3rd "default" state
which follows the global setting).

Another problem is compatibility with existing documents. Some users might just
use the global setting to hide the grid (and actually that was the only option
in OOo and still in AOO), and if we make the per-sheet setting override the
global one, such documents will open with a visible grid, although they were
originally designed with a hidden grid. So we'll have to check upon file import
whether the document was created by an earlier version of LO, and in such case
ignore the per-sheet setting if the global setting is "false".

Unfortunately, this won't solve the incompatibility of documents created by a
newer version, and opening them with an older version, but I don't know what
else can be done in this regard.

Adding Eike to CC, to get his input.
