So, for my next test, I changed the connector driver from mysql to mariadb JDBC
connector 2.2.5. Still no repro.

So apparently not a connector driver problem, at least in combination with a
mysql server.

Unfortunately, I can't test against a mariadb server on Mac as they are not
readily available without polluting one's OS env with homebrew...
