Thanks for your constructive answer!

Surely a less intense color would be better. I have added another screenshot
with LO 5.3.7.2 where the problem is not so big as the color of the grips
better matches the theme and the contrast is not that stark.

But I also think that an even better balance can be found between visibility
(one knows where the grips are) and usability (they don't distract/irritate).
