Yep, that is the typical way.

One thing to note is that some applications store configuration data in the
hidden .config directory inside home. So if there have been updates to the
structure (names of paramters etc.) of the configuration files, you might have
to compare a newer example file with your older one and update the older one.
Maybe using a diffing utility - there exists online ones like
http://www.quickdiff.com/

I was once locked out of a server because my SSH configs had some old crap that
caused the SSH service to refuse to run after an update :) (thankfully the
server had a rescue feature)
