Courriel is a Canadian name (from OQLF). In French from France, last Larousse
edition recommends 'courriel' but 'e-mail' is accepted at the same level. Out
of France (Francophonie), 'e-mail' is used and accepted, so my decision (in the
last translation round) was to keep 'e-mail' as it is the most common known
word for French speaking people in other countries than France and Canada.
Mél. is an abbreviation and not a word (just like Tél.) so it should never be
used as a word (see Academie's abstract: En revanche, on ne peut substituer
: untel at voila.fr)
I'll keep 'e-mail' until I'm sure it is no more the known word for users not
living in France, as those living in France understand both 'e-mail' and
'courriel' - Sophie
