It is true Tools - Language - For paragraph behaves like that. I had not paid
attention to how exactly it is set and it looks like it changes the direct
character formatting.

Tested on 3.3.0 (Win 10) and seems it has always behaved like this.

A more elegant way to change it for multiple paragraphs currently is to set it
in the paragraph style. See
