A more detailed of how you are inserting the reference into the Writer document
would be useful in order to try and reproduce.

Mendeley is an external bibliography provider which can be used with LO via a
plugin (I'm assuming that this is some kind of Java extension as I don't have
it).

As you don't mention precisely how you proceed, it is a bit difficult to know
whether you have encountered an already known bug, e.g. bug 123224, or any of
the other already referenced bugs that are known to occur with Mendeley usage
in LibreOffice.
