Maybe this is a documentation problem, as suggested in bug #112872 (comment 4)

Meanwhile the discussion here in comment 16 through comment 19 has been
valuable for understanding why clone format does not work (for me) sometimes. 
And why "Clear Direct Formatting" can be a solution.
