Mike, please don't allow one commenter to put you off this.  I didn't realise
that you were planning on fixing this, and I thought your list of questions was
just to illustrate the problems rather than seeking feedback that would be
taken into account in an actual fix.  I'll have a go at answering your
questions in a separate reply.
