Dieter,
The fact that I am running Ubuntu 18.04, the most recent long term support
release, should indicate that I am reluctant to take risks with my system. On
the LibreOffice website the latest release recommended for people like me is
6.1.6 and 6.2.4 is advertised as being for the adventurous.

I understand the recommendation to approach Ubuntu support, since if spellcheck
were failing across the board, that is as a result of the common portion of the
LibreOffice code base, this would have been raised a long time ago. However
against what component of Ubuntu do I raise the issue? And even then the most
probably response from the Ubuntu team will be to upgrade to 19.04 and try to
reproduce the problem there.

I appreciate Julian's suggestion to install the package from the PPA but it has
been a couple of years since I last used a PPA. The instructions in the
supplied URL are clear, but far from reassuring:

You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA by
adding ppa:libreoffice/ppa to your system's Software Sources. (Read about
installing)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update

Will I be easily able to back out to a supported release of LibreOffice if I
issue those two commands?

Now suppose I install libreoffice-fresh. If the spellcheck still does not work
that is fine, because then the project team knows that this is a bug that must
be addressed, and you will suggest additional tests for me to perform and
additional information to collect. But what if the fresh version WORKS? That
is the problem has already been fixed or was some strange interaction between
the LibreOffice 6.0.7.3 and Ubuntu 18.04? You can relax knowing that there is
a solution that you can offer to other users. But what do I do since by that
point I am running an unsupported release of LibreOffice and will therefore
inevitably have to install a supported release at some point?

As the King of Siam says in the musical "The King and I": "A puzzlement."

Balancing all of these issues, and considering the advice you have supplied and
where it is coming from I believe I will bite the bullet and upgrade to Ubuntu
19.04 which comes with LibreOffice 6.2.2. If that solves my problem everybody
is happy, and I have an improved version to boot. If I still have the issue I
will try installing the latest PPA then.

Thank you for your advice.
