IMHO creating and using a macro would be the best solution.

This seems a very specific use case, of which there are lots of similar
situations (without possibilities to combine them in a simple, user friendly
function), each with a very limited use.
I have made several barcode generator applications/scripts/macro's, and each
had its own check mechanism.
