I cannot force my customers or the rest of the corporation to use another
document format, so I must use what is provided... The suggested solution is to
simply use Microsoft Office 365 (witch does not run on Linux) software or the
online version (witch is limited)... 

I cannot really comment on the technical reason for why this does not work
properly, only report that it does not. 

Though I have, in the last week, discovered a suite that does very well with
the Microsoft formats, and uses them by default. This is WPS Office out of
China... however I am not sure I trust them... even if it works really well...
Perhaps you could look at how the "filter" in and out the Microsoft Document
format?
