IHMO, update feature should be removed for Linux builds (I use Debian testing
so nothing against Linux :-))
Indeed, on Linux you should only use repository or ppa.
About rpm, deb, ..., it's more for experts or power users who are ready to deal
with dependencies management.
About appImage, Flatpak, ... I don't know how it works and don't have opinion.

Heiko/Xisco: any thoughts here?
