Or maybe I'm just inventing problems, and option #2 is just fine.

The split is performed by DocumentContentOperationsManager::SplitNode (in
sw/source/core/doc/DocumentContentOperationsManager.cxx), and then in
SwTextNode::SplitContentNode (in sw/source/core/txtnode/ndtxt.cxx)
