It's not the spell checker. I wrote the bulk of the book before adding the
images. This problem surfaced with the image handling. You can also tell by
watching the page count flux around as page break shuffling is happening.
Besides, all of the other word processors are using the same spell checkers on
this system and when I open other large (400-850 pages) documents to edit there
are no issues.

The speed problem is somewhat improved. I would not use the word "better"
because "better" would be interpreted as good-to-close which I would not
classify this as.
