It is the purpose of step 2 to make the painting permanent. If you do not want
that, do not check this option, but use the "mouse as pen" option which is
available from context menu in running presentation.

The problem, that the ink cannot be erased in edit mode has its reason in bug
129898. I'm currently working on that bug.
