My question was, whether you have selected the cube or the scene. That
information is in the status bar.

To go from cube selection to scene selection press Ctrl+F3.
For deselecting the scene, a click outside into a free area should work.
Pressing Esc-key should work too. The field in the status bar should then be
empty.
