I pasted from Notepad, Editpad Lite, and LOO text document and they all failed
to warn of overwrite.

It is particularly telling that a paste from another LibreOffice app even
fails. It indicates that the problem is not, as I first assumed, a result of
copying data from an outside app. My bad. I should have investigated in more
depth.
