The font used in the formulas are configurable, even for old versions like
6.0.7.

So likely there is something special about your system, because as my
screenshot shows, the default "Liberation Serif, italic" font for variable
names gives rather consistent shapes for %ixxx and %varxxx Greek symbols.

Please attach a screenshot to illustrate the "very different fonts" problem in
your LibreOffice.
