It's alright.  There are actually four different symbols for lowercase rho, two
upright and two italic (diffrentiated by "i"), as well as two of one shape ρ
and two of the other shape ϱ (diffrentiated by "var"), so it's easy to get
confused.

It doesn't help that there is a problem with displaying the upright symbols
right now (at least for my version 6.4.6), which makes %rho and %irho look the
same.  I've filed bug 136251 for this issue.
