2 things you can try:
1) Open console/terminal and type:
export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen && soffice --draw
then try to reproduce the crash.
If you don't reproduce the crash, you'll got a workaround.

2) Since 6.4.7 is the last official release from 6.4 branch and there won't be
a new one in this branch, you can give a try to 7.0.4 rc2 (from LO ppa too).
