There are UI commands related to this:
> gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources sources
> gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current
> gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources mru-sources
They are reported to have different shortcomings (e.g., "current" does not
change in Ubuntu 17.10+; "mru-sources" only tracks user actions changing the
layout, not switches between windows with different active layouts) - but maybe
looking into what the commands do could allow to do that properly inside our
gtk vcl plugin?
