One additional clue: 
-the LibreOffice package causing the problem was installed with the .deb files
provided on the LO site, using "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" to install all of them.
-I uninstalled the complete LibreOffice package and installed it via the
Flatpak route.
-Using the Flatpak installed version, the problem disappears

So it looks like something happening solely when installing the deb files
provided on the Download page of the LibreOffice web site.
