sm matrix brackets mishandled with OpenGL rendering

No, the OpenGL code has not been removed. Just deprecated and suppressed into
an Expert Configuration feature. This would not be "resolved" until OpenGL
rendering is actually stripped out. Meanwhile remains a bug.
