Nothing weird happened for me. What should I have seen? Are the XLSX files
coming straight from Excel? No editing in LibreOffice? We would need them to be
untouched by LibreOffice in order to have a clear case.

You can achieve this by defining a default blank template.

This could be achieved by chart styles, bug 62925

I don't think there is a problem with rows, but for columns there is bug 50916
