I think you're on to something there. I set the soft edges to the three images
on my test document to 0, then tried:

1. hardware rendering
2. Skia 
3. Force Skia Software Rending

and by far the fastest was (2). No artifacts and fast.
Good catch.

So does that mean we can look at
