To apply to the operator, you have to apply a color to each element of the
formula.

size 20 { color green a color red + color green b = c}

or

color black a^2 color red + color black b^2 = color green c^ color red 2

Glyph for a 'relation' or 'set operator' can not be colored individually, but
will take a color applied to the whole formula.

Colors available to work with are:

black, white, red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow, 
teal, silver, gray, maroon, purple, lime, olive, navy, and fuchsia

No support yet of MathML hex-tupple RGB custom colors (see bug 40436)
