Thank you so much @Michael and @Bartosz :

I just added 3 example documents, all created in MS Excel 2016 and all have the
same content: In the first row there are continuous numbers from 1 - 3200, so
that the sheet has 3200 columns.

attachment 160704: saved as .xlsx (default) file format 

attachment 160705: saved as Strict OpenXML (.xlsx) format

attachment 160706: saved as .ods OpenDocument format -> I checked this one and
MS Excel 2016 opens it correctly with 3200 columns.
