I've tried out all your steps:
1. Create a table in Writer,
2. Fill in cells with alphabetic strings, numeric strings, and alphanumeric
strings,
3. Format the table,
4. Save and exit,
5. Reopen the file.

I'm able to retain all values on reopening. I tested out both your attachments,
it works perfectly for me.

Perhaps you could specify which formatting you've used?
