Actually, there is a simple solution to this. Highlighting does nothing more
than to change the background color of the selected area. Now background color
is property of both paragraph and character styles. If you want to highlight a
paragraph, create a new paragraph style with this property. (Right click the
style that was used before the highlighting. Select New > Area > Color. Select
the color you want, or create a new color. Name the new paragraph style.)
Select the paragraph to be highlighted, and double click the new paragraph
style. A character style for each highlight color can be created the same way.
In other words, do not use things like highlighting, font color, etc., or
any other button which duplicate what styles can do.
