--- Comment #22 from Thomas Lendo <thomas.lendo at gmail.com> ---
So much text and so much complexity in this discussion.
I assume a new feature like 'SimlifyXYZ' would it make more complicated for
users.
I want get back to the original idea: If you use a command (e.g. the highlight
color button in the toolbar) then the "no fill" option should delete the whole
formatting from the file. Now instead of a visible highlight color it gets a
transparent/invisible highlight color. You can see that perfectly in the new
styles inspector or you open the content.xml of the ODF and search for
something like <style:text-properties fo:background-color="transparent"
loext:char-shading-value="0"/> in the <office:automatic-styles> area.
Resolution should be:
Every command that adds formatting to a text should remove that formatting
completely when a 'automatic' or 'no fill' or 'undo format' option was choosen
by the user. Now the xml file is swamped with style attributes.
The only workaround now is to use Ctrl+M.
I doubt that nobody has reported something like this issue in the past.
Searching to avoid duplicates should be the work for the reporter, not for QA.
So I don't do it.
For your information, there are many bugs out there around handling of styles
and direct formatting.
