No, I have checked in all 10 major versions starting from v. 5.2 (where the
selection box was introduced [1]). and it was always the same: it searched the
entered text anywhere in the text of paragraph. E.g., entering "3.2" would
bring 13 results, including "2. final infinitival: ch. 2.1.3.2." and
"2.2.2.1.3.2. Frustrated action construction".

Furthermore, as I mentioned above, it is incorrect to imply that the preference
to use numbers in the search is universal; in writing, the numbering is
automatic, and user often does not even know which number one of the point
might have at any given time, because of added or removed or restructured
points above.

Your proposal was re-worded at the end of comment 10 to follow that idea :-)
