Correct.  But prior to 7.1, this also resulted in the icon disappearing from
the sidebar.  Now the icon remains -- greyed out.

Correct. It was not needed in the past. But the behavior has changed with 7.1
Some might call it a regression. I could not find a bug that proposed changing
the behavior.

So I must be one of the few who does. Makes it easier to reduce clutter, but
leave some options easily available, without having to search in the customize
dialog to add them back.
