I agree with the points Mike makes about the user defined settings shouldn't be
automatically overridden by the software. However, while I'm not sure where
this issue has gone or is likely to go now, I do want to list two thoughts that
have arisen while investigating this issue since I first reported it.

1. Other format compatibility issues and options should only ever come into
effect or be applied to a documents whenever it is being imported from or
exported to another format. Thus deciding on and setting them should be part of
the import and export display or save process and never part of the normal open
and save of the default format process.

This means that only the existing post import or export settings need be saved
in the converted file and there is no need include the compatibility process
options as the new saved file is compliant with the format it's been converted
to. Thus there is no need to keep the pre-conversion settings and the
conversion instructions.

2. All of the settings for the document should be accessible in some way for
the user to set them as they wish. There should be no automatically applied
setting for a document which the user doesn't have a way of setting to suit
themselves. Then they should be saved with the document.

This point is due to there being some sort of default printer margin settings
hidden somewhere within the software. I have no printer attached to my system,
I have no printer configuration setting on my system, nor do I have any printer
settings within LO Writer other than those within the Page styles for Paper
Format and margins. Yet when I set a margin to be 0.25 cm and apply it I get a
message stating this is outside the print range. I've no idea where that is
coming from and if allowed to set itself the hidden default it sets it to 0.64
cm.
...............

On another issue, while I'd love to be involved in checking things out using
the daily builds or alpha versions I've learned, the hard way, I'm not
technically competent enough do that without messing up the version of LO I use
each day, so now I wait until there's a new release to update and work with it.
