Bug 120138 determined regression, as this started only from 3.6, with range:

Simple example steps are in bug 71155. 
More complex examples are in attachment 127653 [details] (please do not add
zip) from bug 102616 as well as attachment 149721 [details] and attachment
149723 [details] from bug 123848 shown in screenshot attachment 172606
[details].
Opposite example, one resolved from 3.6. is in bug 44847 as attachment 55658
[details], shown in screenshot attachment 172605 [details].
This one is Highest to me. But as much as I lower priority on some bugs to
minor or trivial, I seem to counter opposition when I raise it, although as
said, here is this function unusable.
