No need to be too short, and "immediately preceding" is not super simple
English and "ordered or unordered list" needs to be understood as well. Simpler
alternative could be "Make this paragraph continue the previous list, whether
ordered or unordered."

I would also add kind of example like: "... For example, if the previous list
ends with number 5 this one will start with 6." 

But your text is concise and more on the point, could be the better choice. Up
to you :-)
