I confirm this is still present in the current (7.1.5) version
It's been fixed quite recently in the main editor "Normal" mode, but not the
"Notes" mode.

1. Go into the Notes view, with the Slides pane visible.

2. Select a slide, from the left, and then click into the slide and start
typing.

3. In the left, you can no longer see which slide you're working on. 

i.e the UI has correctly given mouse-focus to the notes field, but has
incorrectly stopped highlighting the background of the active slide.
