You perform the wrong sequence of actions, to get the formatting cloned:

- Put the cursor into the *formatted* text
- Click the "Clone Tool" (icon)
- Select (Paint) the text you want to adapt the formatting you cloned in
previous step (keep left mouse button pressed)
