The PDF export dialog is even better in this regards then print as it shows an
error message! Try print with "(o) Pages  = Hello World" - print to file asks
for a filename but doesn't create any and on the next start you get the print
dialog badly initialized and printing is not possible.

Back to the question: For proper usability the user input needs to be checked
on every keypress. If the range is impossible to print or export we have to
disable the confirmative button (Print/Export).
