I checked the situation on 2 more laptops running Manjaro. 
The non-functioning circumflex in the formula editor occurs also on Manjaro
XFCE if the newest "fresh" version (community) is installed. The "still"
version (7.1.6-1) is working without this annoying issue in Manjaro XFCE.
