But now I know what has happened: The setting of view layout in the document from <a href="show_bug.cgi?id=98446#c10">comment 10</a> (viewlayoutcolumn=1) was single page. The setting of view layout in the document from <a href="show_bug.cgi?id=98446#c11">comment 11</a> (viewlayoutcolumn=0) was automatic. So if the setting is automatic the hide whidespace option is grayed out, even if you have a single-page view. So in summary I now would agree, that it is no bug.
