I've heard complaints about the default icons from QA members on IRC as well, which is why I bothered to improve our default icons[3]. Many users choose to use another icon theme as they prefer the metaphors used there. Also the 'Classic' icon theme, which was round in the OOo days, had a dollar sign next to the coins for easier clarity.
