Why do you say 'without relying on third-party tools'? Is there something wrong
in using tools specially created for taking screenshots? I've never used the
MSO feature for screenshots but I'm sure there're other tools out there much
more powerful than the MSO's feature you mentioned.
I'm sorry but I really think there's no need to reinvent the wheel here.
On the other hand, if you really want this feature, you can always create an
extension based on my <a href="show_bug.cgi?id=108311#c1">comment 1</a>.
