For the .doc: Double clicking the icon opens the document in a new window. For the .docx: Double clicking the icon opens the document embedded in a small window. After deselecting the embedded document, the icon disappears and is changed in a icon-size preview window. Right clicking on this preview window gives a 'Save Copy as' menu option.
