I might be experiencing the same (or a related) bug.
I have two similar Dell PCs, both 32-bit. One runs Lubuntu 16.04 and
LibreOffice 5.1.6-rc2 without any problem. The other recently ran Lubuntu 16.10
and LibreOffice 5.1.6 (I think), again without any problem. I have now upgraded
the second machine to Lubuntu 17.04, and Writer crashes on opening (that is,
even on opening a blank document).
On this second machine I uninstalled LibreOffice and ran apt-get autoupdate and
apt-get clean; then reinstalled LibreOffice, obtaining version 5.3.1.2. But the
problem remains. I have also run in safe mode, and reset the settings and the
user profile; but still Writer cashes.
