I installed version 5.4.5.1 and set all the options as you indicated in comment 15. I followed your instructions how to open and edit the document, letting it rest for more than ten minutes before doing again anything with it, and I did this 9 times, nothing happened to the file, all images were there. But I also looked for these issues in the internet and especially in Bugzilla, and there is a lot of recent discussion about this or related subjects, so I believe that, in spite of my not reproducing the error, your case is of general importance. But it seems to be a hard nut to crack.
