The "OS Name" is stored in a registry key located at "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion". Also there are "CurrentMajorVersionNumber" and "CurrentMinorVersionNumber" which replace the "CurrentVersion" key in at least Windows 10 and perhaps 8.
